Gail Frye

Quilting Since:         2001
Quilting Passion:     Design and teaching
Design Style:           Eclectic

Gail loves color.  Not just bright colors or certain colors, but ALL colors.  She has more fun collecting fabrics of every style, theme and color than most people have on vacation!   She does a lot of custom design work for her clients, particularly unique baby quilts, wedding quilts and memory quilts where specific themes or color plays are specified by the client.  She translates their wishes into some remarkable, but often completely unexpected, results.

Throw in her desire to try everything that’s new, and you’ll find that she modifies traditional block patterns to accommodate her way-out color fun and some unique twists and turns, like creating log cabin quilts using a wide range of batiks as her paint palette.  She teaches some of her designs to others through her patterns, but usually leaves the “coloring” to the maker.  She takes pride in creating only one of everything, so each quilt is an original.  Even when the pattern is the same the mix of fabrics will be totally different, as will the size and orientation.  Gaydeen then puts magic into the larger designs through her quilting so these one-of-a-kind treasures are really works of art.

Quilting Since:  2001
Passions:         Shopping for fabric, designing, teaching, machine quilting
Style:               Very Eclectic

Gaydeen is not loath to admit her addiction. The craving never goes away, compelling her to go farther and farther to make her buys. California, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Maryland, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Utah … even Europe. Each time the scenario’s the same. Hunting for a connection, making the buy, coming home with a suitcase full of product. Her drug of choice?  Fabric!

Shopping for fabric is addictive … “I am a ‘fabric-aholic’! I love the feel of fabric – the colors are yummy, the textures are tantalizing, the designs are so exciting! So many choices – I feel like a kid in a candy store! I enjoy the expression of creativity through design. It’s amazing to see the results of the same exact pattern made up in completely different fabric schemes, or the same fabric schemes made up into two different patterns. The quilts take on a personality of their own.”

Completing her first quilt, an intricate 35 piece heart pattern that was incredibly detailed, Gaydeen was hooked. Since then, a day rarely passes when she isn’t busy with a sewing needle or using one of her many sewing machines. The estimated number of quilting projects she has completed is well into the hundreds, varying in size from wall hangings or table runners to king-size bed coverings. Besides her home and those of family and close friends, these custom quilts have made their way into the lives of the homeless, hospice patients, displaced and abused children, and cancer victims.

Enthusiastically Gaydeen shares her passion for quilting with all her students – men and women, ranging from those who have never sewn to those who are very experienced sewers. Having their projects inspected for points, ¼” seams, lined-up corners, and flat ironing can be very daunting. How to unpick is a lesson well learned by all. However, the sense of accomplishment is evident in the look on her student’s faces as they proudly display their completed projects.

Machine quilting provides Gaydeen with an additional outlet for creativity. Assisting clients with the many pattern and thread choices available offers a satisfying reward when they see how the right pattern and thread color enhances their creation and adds a dimension that is simply stunning.
